Colin Kaepernick made headlines this weekend by refusing to stand during the national anthem. His reason: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color, To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Kaepernick has every right to voice an opinion and show it freely. But I also have the right to think he’s an asshole. This comes off as nothing more than an attention grab from a QB who can’t crack the starting lineup. I also think this show of defiance is interesting in relation to his lifestyle. Kaepernick was adopted by white (The oppressors) parents and afforded a quality life, an education from The University of Nevada, and recently signed a $114 million dollar contract in 2015 with the 49ers. Not to mention all of his endorsement deals… So yes, I’ll listen, but for him to describe himself as a black man in a society that “oppresses black people” doesn’t hold a ton of merit when you look at the lavish lifestyle he has been afforded. The message is relative to the person delivering it.
It’s great to speak out, just be prepared to be ridiculed when you look like an asshole. How about doing something with a greater impact toward the cause? Donate time, energy, money. I think there are better ways to show your frustration than shitting on the entire country and especially those who serve. Stand united with everyone else for this so called change you want to see, ya dumbass.
